Battery Rocks swimmers on Christmas day 1987, Liz's father and stepmother Barbara Carpenter in the photo. Battery Rocks, a favourite sea-swimming spot since 19th century, is the rocky headland to the south of Penzance harbour where the pool is situated. It forms part of Pen Sans (Holy Headland) after which Penzance is named.
