Children watch Western Union Fleet from the pool

Children pointing out to the Western Union Fleet's ships on the horizon.  The Western Union Fleet, comprising the officers and men of the Dutch, French and British navies, paid a surprise visit to Penzance, including Jubilee Pool in July 1949.  Decorations were put up and celebrations laid on, and as word of the event spread, visitors poured in. The Cornishman newspaper reflected afterwards that There was a general impression that the town had given a brilliant account of itself.
