Professor Richard Hicks, 1858-1945, was a Victorian Champion Swimmer who achieved national recognition as a long distance swimmer.  He acted as the Penzance Swimming Master for 22 years and during his life saved 36 people from drowning. His motto was “Everyone should learn to swim”.

This photo was taken at John Moody's Photographic studio in Penzance in approximately 1879.
