Sailors of Western Union Fleet

Sailors of the Western Unioin Fleet enjoying time ashore on Penzance Promenade. Saturday 2nd July 1949 was the climax of four amazing days when the Western Union Fleet, comprising the officers and men of the Dutch, French and British navies, came to visit Penzance, including Jubilee Pool. Decorations were put up and celebrations laid on, and as word of the event spread, visitors poured in. The Cornishman newspaper reflected afterwards that There was a general impression that the town had given a brilliant account of itself.
